A4

Project details
The Netherlands: Widening of the A4 motorway (Burgerveen-Leiden)
Print project overview | Back to project selector

Client
The A4 motorway is an important road link between Amsterdam and The Hague. The section between junction Burgerveen and Roelofarendsveen and between Leiderdorp and Leiden is the only part of the A4 that still has just two lanes in both directions. As a result, there is often traffic congestion. To solve this problem, the Department of Public Works has decided to widen this section.

Type of work
Van Oord is carrying out the earthwork for the widening of the A4 and the links to other roads. In addition, Van Oord is using specialised earth-moving equipment to excavate the construction pits for the new aqueduct under the Haarlemmermeer Ring Canal and a 1.4 km sunken section where the motorway will be built.
The vertical drainage will be constructed by Wicks. Mijnster is handling the supply of sand for the raising of the new roads.

Results
Thanks to the extra capacity on this section of the A4 motorway, tailbacks will be reduced on this important traffic artery in the Randstad urban conurbation. The northern section will be completed in 2010, the southern section in 2014.
