Reclaiming land to accommodate a growing population

Our client
The population of Ondo State, in oil-rich Nigeria, is growing, but there is lack of land suitable for construction purposes. The state government decides to create new land in the riverine delta to establish Adagbakuja New Town. In 2007, the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission awarded a contract to Van Oord to reclaim the much-needed land.

Our work
In March 2007, Van Oord began with a detailed sand search campaign in the surrounding area. Suitable borrow areas were determined and cleared of bush. Van Oord used cutter suction dredger Calabar River to remove sand from the borrow areas. The sand was pumped towards the Adagbakuja New Town reclamation site using floating lines and landlines.

Our results
By August 2008, Van Oord succeeded in reclaiming 200 ha of swampy area using 4,2 million m3 of sand. Adagbakuja New Town is now ready for further development.
