Our client
Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd decided to extend the port facility of Cape Lambert in Western Australia. Van Oord will execute the dredging works for the construction of the new port facilty. The port will be expanded with four new berth pockets, a port basin, a turning basin and a channel to connect the new facilities with the existing entrance channel.
Our work
The dredging works include the removal of underwater obstructions, dredging of the seabed to the nominated depths and disposal of dredged material to offshore disposal areas. In total some 9 million m3 of sand, gravel and cap rock will be dredged. Van Oord will deploy trailing suction hopper dredger Rotterdam, cutter suction dredger Castor and backhoe dredger BHD Hippopotes.
Our results
The first phase of the Cape Lambert Port expansion will increase the export capacity of iron ore by a further 50 MTPA (million tonnes per annum). Raw materials are a major Australian export product and the port expansion will contribute to the growth of the Australian economy.
