Our Client
Project developer South Energyx is part of the Chagoury Group, a leading construction and property company in West Africa. The group's activities include construction, transportation, manufacturing, banking, insurance, telecommunications and IT. The group also invests in dredging and land reclamations. One of their goals is to stimulate the African economy. The group has been involved in major projects, such as the development of a luxury residential complex on Banana Island and the development of the Nigerian Defence Academy. Chagoury Group also recently upgraded the Eko Hotel, the largest hotel in Lagos State.

Our Work
Eko Atlantic City is a reclamation project that, once completed, is expected to be over 9 km2. Eko Atlantic City will reverse the damage done by erosion to the coast over the years and return the Lagos coastline to its state in the 1950's. Out of the newly reclaimed land a new city will rise, expected to become a home to over 250.0000 residents.

Van Oord was contracted to supply 10 million m3 sand for the first phase of the Eko Atlantic City project. Van Oord deployed two Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers for this project. The Rotterdam was used for the first part of the project, supplying 2 million m3. The Volvox Terranova pumped the remaining 8 million m3 ashore. The sand was dredged off the coast of Lagos and pumped ashore from the Commodore Channel through a combination of floating and land-based pipelines.

Our Result
Eko Atlantic City is aiming to become a vibrant, twenty-first century city, and help establish Lagos as the financial capital of Africa. Eko Atlantic City will have different districts for residential, commercial and tourist purposes and a financial district with towering skyscrapers to attract major companies to settle on the island. The project also eases the pressure on the valuable little space in Africa's fastest growing city which is cramped between the Lagos Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean.
