Our client
Eastport UK, the operators of Great Yarmouth Port, awarded the contract for the construction of the infrastructure works to their Outer Harbour Development to a Joint Venture of Van Oord UK Ltd and Edmund Nuttall Ltd. The project, which commenced in June 2007 and is still currently being undertaken, will significantly expand the port's current operating capacity.

Our work
Van Oord's scope of works for the project includes the construction of two breakwaters with a total length of approximately 1.4 km. In addition, reclamation works are being undertaken which involve the dredging of 1,600,000 m³ of sand from inside and around the outer harbour, the material from which is being re-used to reclaim 17.6 ha of the land inside the breakwaters and quay walls for future Port development.

Van Oord's Joint Venture Partners, Edmund Nuttall Ltd, are responsible for the construction of approximately 450 m of quay wall with associated capping beam and crane rail.

The Works also include the construction of 225 m of revetment berth and associated berthing dolphins.

The breakwater and revetment constructions have required the importation by sea of approximately 850,000 tonnes of rock materials supplied from Norwegian quarries.

The project is on programme to be completed in the early part of 2009.

Our result
On completion of the project, it is envisaged that construction of this new outer harbour, with its state-of-the-art facilities will significantly expand the port's existing operating capacity and will ultimately create 1,000 jobs and attract over 120,000 additional visitors to the area of Great Yarmouth every year, thereby returning the port of Great Yarmouth to a leading position as a European Gateway.
