Our client
The Kenyan government granted an assignment for the deepening of the access channel to the Port of Mombassa and the dredging of the basin for a new container quay, which will be built under a separate contract with Japanese support (Japan International Cooperation Agency - JICA).

Our work
The project involves dredging a total of approximately 7 million m3 of material, a small part of which consists of access channel maintenance. The major part of the dredging work involves creating the basin for a new container quay. As a result of the dredging, the port access channel and the new basin will have a depth of -15 m CD. Existing quays will be returned to their original depth, ranging from -10 m CD to -12.2 m CD. The work is being carried out by suction hopper dredger Volvox Delta and a cutter suction dredger.

Our results
Mombassa, bordering on the Indian Ocean, is an important port city and Kenya's only international sea port. The port is being extended to include a new container quay and the navigable depth is being increased substantially by dredging the access channel. As a result of the work, larger vessels will be able to enter the port in the future, which will lead to an increase in container transhipment capacity.
