Our client
The project is part of the Programa de Aceleracão de Crecimento (PAC) or accelerated growth plan. A special government body, the Secretaria Especial de Portos (SEP), was installed to manage the various port projects that fall under the plan. The secretariat is currently managing more than ten similar port development projects in Brazil.
Our work
The project consists of three phases. In the first phase consists of dredging the access channel to the container and cruise terminals. In the second phase, a half-metre layer of polluted silt from a small portion of the area needs to be dredged and removed. In the final phase the hard materials, like stiff clay and weathered rock are removed and Van Oord Somar dredges the remaining sections of the port down to the new target depth of 15 m. In total about 4 million m3 of spoil needs to be removed.
Our result
Brazil is one country where economic activity is booming, despite the worldwide economic crisis. The priority is on logistical development, in particular port development. That makes it a good place for Van Oord Somar. And indeed Van Oord Somar is busy working in the ports of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Francisco do Sul, Itajaí, Sao Luis and Suape.
