Our client
To accommodate the numerous cruise vessels calling to the port each year, Rosmorport, which is part of Russian Ministry of Transport, is developing a new port in St. Petersburg.

Our work
Van Oord had been awarded the dredging works related to the development of the access channel (10 km long) and the port basin (approximately 80 ha). A 2,200 m berth is being developed by Russian contractors parallel to the dredging works.

The total scope of work for Van Oord is over 15,000,000 m³ of silt and clay, to be dredged by two cutter suction dredgers in the period 2006-2008. The material was dumped in old sand borrow areas. The pumping distance will be anywhere between 7 and 9 km, an operation for which a large number of submerged steel pipelines sections were assembled at the Van Oord temporary work yard at St. Petersburg.

The project also required the development of new land, a total of up to 120 ha. In the first stages, a Russian contractor was involved to transport the sand from the borrow area. Van Oord placed the sand in the reclamation area by means of hydraulic pumping.

The result
After completing the works large passenger ships can once again enter the port of St. Petersburg.
