Taiwan: Deepening Taipei Port

To give large container ships access to the port of Taipee, the access channel had to be deepened to -15 m. The turning basin also needed to be deepened to -14.5 m. Hung Hua was chosen to execute this work after a local compay failed to deepen the port and access channel. Hung Hua was awarded this project because they could promise the Client to finish the work in time, by using the Volvox Asia of Van Oord, before the opening in February 2009.
Our work
Conditions were less than ideal for the trailing suction hopper dredger and the crew. Shipping continued in the port during the project. Also the Volvox Asia came across very large rocks. That meant suspending dredging operations regularly to clear out the suction opening. The strong current at the harbour entrance made dredging difficult. The strong current and the bad weather conditions made it hard to deposit the load outside the protected harbour.
Despite these conditions the Volvox Asia dredged about 2 million m3 of sand and sludge, bringing the project to a successful conclusion in February 2009.
Our Results
In February 2009 the first container ship was welcomed in the port of Taipee. Because the port is now more accessible for large container ships this will give maritime transport in Taiwan a boost.
