Van Oord’s policy on socially responsible business practices focuses on how we treat our planet (Planet), our people (People) and how we can integrate these themes into our business operations (Profit). In light of this fact, energy management and the reduction of CO2 emissions play an important role at Van Oord.Energy Management Van Oord's goal is to be 5% more energy efficient in 2015 than it was in
2010. To achieve this goal, we have implemented an energy management system
based on the EN 16001 standard for energy management systems. In short, this
means that Van Oord has established and quantified a number of energy reduction
targets and has adopted the corresponding organisational measures in its
management system. For Van Oord, the most important energy issue by far is the
fuel consumption by our ships. That is why most of our energy reduction
campaigns are aimed at reducing our ships' fuel consumption.
The most important energy reduction campaigns and the quarterly reports
on the status of these campaigns can be downloaded from the overview at the
bottom of this page.
CO2 emissions Both the energy consumption as well as CO2 emissions are
largely attributable to our ships' consumption of fuel and the use of
lubricants on those ships. The overview below indicates the CO2 emissions of the various business divisions in recent years. Our dredging
equipment belongs to Van Oord Equipment BV. In addition to
energy management, the annual determination of our CO2 emissions and
our measures to achieve a reduction of those emissions have also been
integrated into the Van Oord Management System.

The documentation below provides details on how we arrived at the
figures in the table above.
Van Oord Nederland Large clients in the Netherlands are developing
systems to make their purchases sustainable and to provide an incentive to
their suppliers to be aware of and reduce their own CO2 production.
For that purpose, Stichting Klimaatvriendelijk Aanbesteden en Ondernemen (SKAO)
(Foundation for Environmentally Responsible Tendering) manages a CO2 Performance Ladder [Prestatieladder] for suppliers. This certification
programme was originally developed by ProRail as a means of promoting CO2 awareness as part of purchasing. The more conscientious suppliers are about
their CO2 emissions, the higher their EMVI scores on their tenders.
The Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management [Rijkswaterstaat]
is also developing the DUBOLCALC system, which will help calculate the
environmental impact made in carrying out a specific project, including the
amount of CO2 emitted by the tenderers. Van Oord participates in
work groups established by industry organisations that are tackling energy and
CO2 issues, and we try to ensure that our clients can obtain
relevant information on emissions for maritime construction projects through
those industry organisations.
Van Oord Nederland bv has established
its CO2 emissions for 2009. The emissions analysis was performed in
accordance with the principles of the NEN ISO 14064 standard.
In October 2010, these emissions
were verified by Lloyd's Register in connection with Van Oord Nederland bv's CO2 Performance Ladder
Certification. On 23 December 2010, Van Oord Nederland received a Level 3 CO2 Awareness Certificate from the certifying agency (see news item).
The certificate, as well as the
documentation required for the CO2 Performance Ladder, may be
downloaded below.
