Van Oord intensifies its corporate sustainability efforts by implementing an energy management system.
In 2009, we carried out our initial first carbon footprint analysis for 2008. The result was determined based on the requirements of the NEN ISO 14064 guideline for quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. Our direct (e.g. ship fuel) and indirect (e.g. electricity consumption and car fuel) emissions constituted approximately 0.1% of the emissions caused worldwide by the maritime sector. Most of those emissions were direct CO2 emissions caused by fuel consumption by our ships. Our carbon footprint for the last few years can be found on the Energy & emission page.
The measures to reduce emissions throughout our company are geared towards increasing the efficiency of our dredging process, upgrading our current fleet and building new vessels. At the same time, we are ensuring that our staff is aware of energy consumption and that they conduct themselves such that we achieve sustainable energy use. Environmental aspects and alternative working methods play an important role in the implementation of our projects. Moreover, as one of the initiators of 'Building with Nature', we are closely involved in the interaction between maritime infrastructure and ecology.
