For most careers at Van Oord, you need to take the ‘Nature and Technology’ subject cluster at school, with maths (B), physics, and chemistry being compulsory.

Captain of a cutter suction dredger

As the captain of a cutter suction dredger, you are responsible for the dredging process on board, and for maintenance and repair of the ship.

Required qualifications: Senior secondary vocational education (MBO), nautical college, appropriate navigation licence

Officer

The officer steers the ship. The job also includes maintenance and repair of the onboard dredging equipment.

Superintendent

The superintendent is responsible for preparing and carrying out the project. He is also the main contact between the project manager and the vessel's crew.

Required qualifications: Diploma in civil engineering from a Dutch 'University of Applied Sciences' (HBO), or equivalent

Project engineer

The project engineer is in charge of designing projects. He advises the project team while the project is under way and develops working methods.

Required qualifications: University degree in civil or mechanical engineering

Surveyor

A surveyor carries out measurements and collects information using special equipment. He measures the sand under the water.

Required qualifications: Secondary vocational education (MBO) in hydrography, or equivalent
