The position

For our Fleet department we are looking for 2nd Officers with dredging experience.

The 2nd Officer on board our (TSHD-)fleet has to ensure that assigned equipment is used in compliance with the safety, maritime and environmental regulations and in such manner that optimal production is achieved. During the watch, the 2nd Officer is responsible for the dredging process and the productivity of the vessel. The 2nd Officer supports the Chief Officer with all navigational duties and takes on the role of Safety Officer. 

Your responsibilities

Sailing in a safe, maritime, correct/responsible and environmental friendly way. Together with the Chief Officer you are in charge of all navigational and production operations. In this position the 2nd Officer will report and support the Chief Officer who is watch responsible.

Optimizing the dredging production and continuity of the vessel. Together with the Chief Officer the 2nd Officer is in charge of all dredging operations. Report to and support the Chief Officer who is watch responsible. Execute regular maintenance, repair activities and report to the Deck Officer.   

Maintain the safety and environmental regulations on board as well as the maintenance of safety equipment (ISM & ISPS). Make sure the Van Oord Management System is executed, Company policies as well as the standing instructions. Comply with all national and international maritime law and regulations. The 2nd Officer is engaged during safety drills and reports all incidents or near misses. Once the 2nd Officer is working in the day shift, he/she acts as a safety officer and is responsible for all safety activities.  

Discuss and advise with the Master, Chief Officer / Deck officer about methods to optimize the production process. Provide a handover after each shift and make sure other crew members are well informed. Involved in training and coaching of 3rd Officers and trainees on board, regardless nationality or level of education/experience.

Maintain ships administration in accordance with the Van Oord standards, e.g. ships logbook, daily reports, set up toolbox meetings. Maintain the revisions of the notice to Mariners. Maintain the dredging technical administration in cooperation with the Deck Officer.

Is authorized to make decisions and perform accordingly in order to execute the above tasks and responsibilities, always acting in accordance with the vessel related agreement, Van Oord Management system, company policy, standing instructions and maritime law.

Job requirements

In possession of a Maritime academy degree. At least intermediate vocational level (MBO 4), preferably higher intermediate vocational level (HBO).

Practical experience as an officer of the navigational watch on board a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger or self-propelled Cutter Suction Dredger is necessary.

All STCW courses: Basic training, PSCRB, Advanced Firefighting, ECDIS, Radar management level, GMDSS – General, Designated Security Duties.
Next to the legal requirements, the 2nd Officer will have to complete all Van Oord required trainings: Automation & Production Technology (TSHD), Rigging and Slinging, Crane operator up to 150 ton course. And as per Van Oord training matrix all related safety officer courses.     

Candidates must be able to travel and work worldwide.

Supplementary skills:
Able to communicate in English spoken and in writing.
