Are you interested in the way we deal with water, the economy and the environment in the Netherlands and do you want to learn all about hydraulic engineering tenders? Then being a junior coastal engineer at Van Oord is the job for you. From deep under the water to high up in the air, our projects in the Netherlands are often unique and are without exception brimming with technical, financial and organizational challenges. Would you like to devise smart solutions for us? If so, apply for the role of junior coastal engineer at Van Oord!
The construction of the second Maasvlakte. The complete refurbishment of the Afsluitdijk. The future-proof fairway at IJmuiden. At Van Oord, we have fantastic projects in our portfolio, often of great economic and ecological importance. Before the first shovel goes into the ground, however, a lot of water will have flowed under the bridge. Your work begins in the tender phase: in a team of engineers, planners and cost estimators, you create designs for dykes, harbours, coastal and shore work and land reclamation, and translate these designs into the best bid and the most efficient execution. Your solutions are smart, cost-effective and feasible, partly because you are making full use of the knowledge and practical experience of your fellow engineers. You make sure your chosen solution continues to meet the client's requirements during execution. This is an interesting and educational role, in which your knowledge and ingenuity will be called on from the drawing board in Rotterdam to the projectoffice in Den Oever.
You are keen to learn all about high-quality tenders and project execution in a wet environment. With an eye for the client's wishes, you employ your analytical skills and your flexibility in order to deliver top quality. You work carefully, preferring to do one calculation too many rather than one too few! You are able to work independently but do not hesitate to call on your colleagues for help. In addition, you bring the following to the table:
• a university civil engineering degree and affinity with hydraulic engineering;
• some knowledge of waves, derivation of hydraulic load (RISKEER, Hydra-NL) and wave modelling software an advantage (e.g. SWAN, SWASH, Mike21);
• creative and communicative;
• experience is welcome but not essential;
• excellent command of the Dutch language.
Along with 15 other coastal engineers and other colleagues, you will be working on often highly visible projects at the limits of what is technically feasible. There is an open and positive atmosphere within the department, with abundant exchange of information and knowledge. The best reward? When you see your projects becoming reality before your eyes. You will also receive an employment contract for 32 to 40 hours. Alongside an attractive package, you will be given plenty of room (and a training budget) to develop professionally and personally, internationally too, so that you can continue to grow within your role, plus the opportunity to arrange your working hours flexibly.
