The position
Were you born with an inquisitive mind? Then being a junior R&D engineer at Van Oord is the job for you. From deep under the water to high up in the air, our projects are often unique and are without exception brimming with technical, financial and organizational challenges. Would you like to play a key role in further improving our dredging practice? If so, apply for the role of junior R&D engineer at Van Oord!

Your responsibilities
Whether it's coastal replenishment, creating artificial islands or deepening a navigation channel, fluid mechanics, geotechnical, geomechanical and many other aspects play a role in dredging work. You will perform research into these aspects and subsequently advise us on innovation in dredging techniques and the consequences for our dredging equipment. Based on model simulations, laboratory measurements and practical tests on board our many ships, you will develop expertise which we then draw on when constructing or modifying the tools we use. You will be involved in the entire research process, from the first draft to tests in practice, with all the unpredictability these can involve. As such, you will see at first hand how your work contributes to the learning curve which, as an innovative company, we always aim to be on. This is an extremely interesting role, in which your knowledge and ingenuity will be called on from the head office in Rotterdam to a trailing hopper suction dredger in the Baltic Sea.

Job requirements
The fact that you have a truly investigative mind is clear from your structured, results-focused and tenacious approach. This is how you acquire innovative knowledge, which you are keen to share – whether with your colleagues at the office or on board, or with the guests at an international conference. They can see how passionate you are about your field! In addition, you bring the following to the table:
• a university degree in civil engineering or mechanical engineering
• knowledge of or a genuine interest in dredging technology, hydrodynamics, soil mechanics and measurement techniques
• experience is welcome but not essential
• excellent command of the English language

We offer
The opportunity to test theory in the crucible of practice, both with computer or other simulations and on board our large, unique vessels all over the world. We will challenge you to demonstrate your innovative, multidisciplinary and realistic approach and your ability to think outside the box. Alongside an attractive package, you will be given plenty of opportunity (and a training budget) to develop professionally and personally, internationally too, so that you can continue to grow within your role.
