Van Oord has taken on the job of deepening the harbour of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The contract value amounts to some EUR 45 million. The client is a ministry set up specifically to keep Brazil’s ports accessible for larger ships. Execution of the project will commence in 2010 and take almost a year to complete.
Van Oord will dredge more than 4 million m3 of material in the access channel and harbour, ranging from soft clay to mudstone. The company will deploy a mid-sized trailing suction hopper dredger, its new backhoe Goliath, and two new self-propelled split barges, each one with a hopper capacity of 2,850 m3.
This new project enhances Van Oord's position in South America. Brazil, where the company has been active since 1985, is one of Van Oord's home markets. In recent years it has also undertaken projects in Chile, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico and Venezuela.
