Van Oord wins contract to construct underwater slope protection

Van Oord has won a contract to design and construct the underwater slope protection along the natural channels in the Eastern Scheldt and Western Scheldt estuaries. The work will mainly involve installing steel and phosphorous slag and quarry rock.

In addition to price, other decisive factors during the tender procedure were the reusability of the materials and the durability of the structure beyond fifty years. Van Oord achieved the maximum score on these points.

The contract involves a sum of more than EUR 9 million. The customer is the Department of Public Works and Water Management for Zeeland. The work has already begun and the project should be completed by mid-2010. Van Oord will be deploying its own split barges as well as crane ships and a special rock-placing vessel owned by subsidiary L. Paans & Zonen.
