Van Oord deepens port in Beira, Mozambique

Van Oord has been awarded the contract to perform maintenance dredging in the port of Beira, Mozambique. The customer is CFM (Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique). The contract value amounts to some EUR 37 million. The work has begun in April 2010 and will take approximately eighteen months to complete. A portion of the project costs are being covered by the Dutch government.

The work involves dredging the port of Beira. A total of 8 million cubic metres of sand and clay will be dredged. Some of the sand will be used for land reclamation for a coal terminal. Van Oord will deploy amongst others two medium-sized trailing suction hopper dredgers. In corporation with Van Oord's subsidiary Wicks the new site will be prepared for further development by using vertical drains.

Deepening the port of Beira will give a strong boost to Mozambique's economic development.
