Rotterdam, 10 August 2012 – Van Oord subsidiary Wicks, an international contractor in ground treatment and marine drilling and blasting, has begun operating the largest vertical drainage rig in the world. The innovative rig is based on a Hytachi EX1200, which underwent extensive modification.
The ceremony marking the start of operations was performed by Jelle Mens, Wicks Manager, and Rienie van der Meer, who headed the project engineering team. At a maximum installation depth of -60 m and maximum penetration force of 45 tonnes, the new rig puts Wicks at the top of the market in this segment.
Vertical drain installation is a very cost-effective ground treatment method for consolidating water-saturated soil and improving soil stability. Van Oord has 16 vertical drainage rigs.
