Rotterdam, 25 August 2016 – With just over a week to go before the World Port Days in Rotterdam, Van Oord is confirming the participation of its offshore installation vessel Aeolus. The vessel, which installed the last of 150 wind turbines at the Gemini offshore wind farm on 23 August, will be open to visitors. On the Saturday evening, 3 September, the Aeolus will have a ‘starring role on legs’ in the musical light, image and sound show. For this occasion, the vessel will be jacked up in the Nieuwe Maas waterway next to the Erasmus bridge. This show, which traditionally ends with fireworks, can be watched by the public from the shore around the Erasmus bridge.
With a length of 139 metres and a beam of 38 metres, it will be easily recognisable along the Parkkade quay in Rotterdam. The Aeolus was added to Van Oord’s state-of-the-art fleet in 2014 and was specially designed for the construction of offshore wind farms. The vessel is equipped with a crane that can lift more than 900 tonnes, which means that it can transport and install foundations and wind turbines. Four huge legs with a length of 85 metres each and a weight of 920 tonnes ensure that the vessel can stand on the seabed in depths of up to 45 metres.
